CRYOTHERAPY IN LONDON

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a medical treatment where the body is exposed to extremely cold temperatures for a short period of time. The treatment can be done on specific body parts or on the entire body. Cryotherapy can be delivered in a number of ways, such as ice packs, cold water immersion or chambers where cold air circulates.

Can cryotherapy be an effective dermatology treatment?

Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive therapy. The goal of cryotherapy is to reduce inflammation and pain, improve circulation, and promote healing in injured or damaged tissue. This type of treatment removes damaged or diseased tissue. Most people recover quickly from the procedure and with little pain. In dermatology, cryotherapy can help treat the following conditions:
  • Skin cancer – it is occasionally used to remove small skin cancers that are on the surface of the skin.
  • Basal cell carcinoma – cryotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment for basal cell carcinoma. The dermatologist applies nitrogen to the tumour, freezing the damaged tissue. The frozen skin falls off as the skin underneath heals.
  • Actinic Keratoses – Cryotherapy can be used to treat precancerous skin lesions known as actinic keratoses. The treatment destroys the abnormal cells and encourages the growth of healthy new skin.
  • Freckles and solar lentigos – this involves ‘freezing off’ the lesion in a quick and painless procedure using cold liquid nitrogen
  • Warts and verrucas – Cryotherapy can effectively remove Warts and Verrucas by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. The treatment causes the wart to die and eventually fall off.
  • Skin tags – Cryotherapy can also be used to remove skin tags. The process involves applying liquid nitrogen to the skin tag, which freezes and destroys the tissue.
  • Psoriasis – Cryotherapy can provide temporary relief from the symptoms of psoriasis by reducing inflammation and itchiness.
  • Acne – Cryotherapy can help reduce inflammation associated with acne, and may help to kill the bacteria responsible for causing breakouts

How does cryotherapy actually work?

When the body is exposed to the cold, the skin starts sending messages to the brain, stimulating regulatory functions. The body responds by compressing blood vessels, so all blood gets pushed in the direction of the organs. It gets more oxygen and becomes nutrient-rich. The body begins releasing anti-inflammatory molecules, endorphins and toxins. As the body transitions to a warmer place and starts heating, the blood vessels expand and nutrient-rich blood flows back to the tissues, helping flush out inflammation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Most people describe the sensation as feeling cold, like standing outside in winter without appropriate clothing. Some people may experience tingling, numbness, or a pins-and-needles sensation, which usually goes away once the treatment is over. It is possible to experience minor pain during cryotherapy and a burning sensation when the skin thaws afterwards. There may also be soreness for a few days.
Cryotherapy can be safe when done correctly and under the supervision of a trained professional. However, like any medical treatment, there are potential risks and side effects to consider.
Cryotherapy can cause pain or discomfort during or after the treatment. The treated area may become red, swollen, and blistered. This is a normal part of the healing process and usually subsides within a few days. In rare cases, cryotherapy can cause scarring, especially if the treated area is large or deep. There might also be some pigmentation changes in the treated areas in comparison to the surrounding areas. The skin at and around the treatment site may lighten or darken in colour, especially in darker-skinned people. Although rare, there is a risk of infection following cryotherapy. It’s important to keep the treated area clean and dry to reduce this risk. Risks and benefits are discussed with your dermatologist before treatment.
Dermatologists successfully treat many problems with cryotherapy. Some skin conditions treated with cryotherapy do not require any special care after treatment.
It is possible to get benefits from just one cryotherapy session, but the most effective is when used regularly. Our team of specialist dermatologists can provide guidance on the best treatment approach.
